Sometimes the ride isn’t about the ride. Sometimes the ride is just the price of admission to somewhere worth showing up for, and in Helen, Georgia that somewhere is the river. Shooting the ‘Hooch — floating the Chattahoochee in an inner tube straight through the middle of an alpine village — is the summer tradition every rider in the Southeast has ridden past and never stopped for. This one is a little off the CowFactor rocker: no switchbacks to grade, no cow crossings to survey, no gravel-strewn apex waiting to ruin your afternoon. This time the twisties are made of water, the pace is set by the current, and the only throttle input required is a push-off stick. Call it a MooFloat — our name for the days when you park the bike and the destination does the work.
Welcome to Helen, Georgia — Georgia’s Alpine Village, tucked into the southern end of the North Georgia mountains where the Chattahoochee River comes down out of the hills and rolls straight through the middle of town. Every motorcyclist in the Southeast already knows Helen as a waypoint. It’s the pin at the bottom of the Richard Russell run, the coffee stop before Unicoi Gap, the parking-lot-full-of-bikes you ride past on the way to somewhere else. This article is about stopping.
Because Helen has three destinations that will fill a summer day better than another hundred miles of pavement: the town itself, Helen Tubing & Water Park, and Cool River Tubing. Ride in, park the bike, get in the water. That’s the whole plan. And we filmed the float in 360° so you can see exactly what you’re signing up for.

About the Missing Road GPX
Straight talk: we don’t have a route file to get you here, and we’re not going to fake one. Helen sits at the intersection of GA-75 and GA-17/75 ALT, and half the reason it’s a legend is that every approach is good. Come down 75 from Unicoi Gap. Come across the Richard Russell Scenic Highway. Come up 17 through Sautee Nacoochee. Come off 129 and cut over on 75 ALT. There is no wrong line into Helen — pick whichever CowFactor route you’ve already got loaded and let it dump you into town.
The only GPX we’re publishing here is the one that matters for this article: the river track itself, recorded from a tube.
Destination One: The Town of Helen
Helen is a Bavarian alpine village that has no business existing in White County, Georgia, and that is precisely the point. In the late 1960s a dying logging town decided to reinvent itself with gingerbread trim and hand-painted murals, and it worked so thoroughly that the place now pulls millions of visitors a year. Cobblestone alleys, timber-frame facades, the smell of bratwurst, and a river running right through the middle of it all.
For riders, Helen is a natural staging point. The town is compact enough to walk end to end in fifteen minutes, which means you park the bike once and you’re done. Boots off, gear stowed, and the whole afternoon is on foot — or in a tube.
The strasse names on the map tell you everything about the commitment level here: Edelweiss Strasse, Bruckenstrasse, Chattahoochee Strasse, Alpenrosen Strasse. Even the side streets are in on the bit. If you’ve spent the morning at 6,000 RPM on Russell, an hour of pretzels and window shopping is a legitimate cool-down lap.
Factor Ratings — The Town of Helen
CowFactor:
1/5. Zero livestock in the village proper, but the pastures north of town on 75 and out toward Sautee will get you a token cow or two on the way in. Helen itself is bratwurst-adjacent, not cow-adjacent.
PeakFactor:
— 2/5. The town sits in the valley floor at roughly 1,450 feet. But you’re ringed on all sides by real mountains, and every road out of here climbs. Low peak score for the destination; the approach is a different story entirely.
CreekFactor:
— Maxed. The Chattahoochee runs directly through the center of town, under the bridges, past the restaurant decks, and behind the shops. You can eat lunch and watch tubers float by six feet from your table. This is the highest CreekFactor destination we have ever rated, and it isn’t close.
Destination Two: Helen Tubing & Water Park
The pink tubes. If you’ve been to Helen in summer, you’ve seen them stacked in trailers and bobbing down the ‘Hooch by the hundred.
Helen Tubing & Water Park runs a two-location operation with a north entry point up on Highway 75 and a south exit down in town. Park at the north office at 9917 Hwy 75 North, buy your ticket, and you’re in the water right there — the bus shuttles you back to your bike at the end of the float. Facilities include free parking, changing rooms, showers, and a picnic area positioned so the non-tubers in your group can sit in the shade and watch everyone else drift past.
They also run the water park side — slides, a lazy river, the whole business — so if you’re rolling in with family who aren’t sold on an hour in a river tube, there’s a second option twenty yards away. Tubing hours run 9 AM to 5 PM. Their gift shop sells the push-off stick, which we will get to in the Pro Tips, because you want one.
The rules are real: the City of Helen has an ordinance prohibiting coolers, alcohol, and glass on the river, and they enforce it against both you and the tubing company. One non-alcoholic drink container per person. No backpacks or bags — waterproof phone pouches only. Don’t make it weird for the operators.

— 0/5. Not a single cow. There is no agricultural encounter available to you in an inner tube. We are rating this honestly and it is a zero.
PeakFactor:
— 1/5. You’re floating downhill, technically, at the rate of about one river-mile per lifetime. The mountains are gorgeous from water level. Your elevation change is measured in inches.
CreekFactor:
— Maxed, obviously. You are inside the creek. There is no higher expression of CreekFactor than becoming, briefly, part of the watershed.
Destination Three: Cool River Tubing
Cool River Tubing & Adventures has been a family-owned fixture in Helen for over thirty years, and they’re the operator offering a choice of trip length. The long ride runs about 2 to 2.5 hours; the short ride cuts that down to roughly 1 to 1.5. Same river, different commitment.
You’ll find them at 590 Edelweiss Strasse, right in town. Your ticket covers the tube, the shuttle, life jackets, and facility access. Tubes come with or without bottoms — the kid-sized ones (recommended 12 and under) all have bottoms. One person per tube. Walk-ins are welcome, though reserving online will save you standing in the waiver line.
They also run a zipline and aerial adventure operation on the same property, which is a genuinely useful backup plan if the river’s running low or you’ve got someone in the group who’d rather be forty feet up than knee-deep. It’s the only place in Helen where you can do both in the same afternoon.
The float from either operator carries you straight through downtown — you pass under the bridges, alongside the shops, past people eating on the decks. On our 360° track you can watch the town roll by on the bank while the mountains sit above the rooflines. It’s a strange and excellent way to see a place you’ve only ever seen from a saddle.

— Maxed. Thirty years of putting people directly into the river. The CreekFactor scale was not designed to measure this and we are aware of that.

- Bringing a non-riding partner or the kids to a destination that justifies the trip on its own
- The 95° July Saturday when the pavement is trying to kill you and the pass is bumper-to-bumper anyway
- Anyone who’s ridden past the tube trailers a hundred times and finally wants to know

Pro Tips
- Buy the push-off stick. Roughly the price of a coffee, and it’s the difference between floating and dragging yourself off rocks for two hours. When the water’s low it’s not optional. Bring your own only if it matches what they sell — a smooth handle, no limbs, no points.
- Screenshot your ticket barcode before you get to town. Cell service in Helen collapses under summer crowds. If you can’t pull up your barcode, you can’t prove you paid. Print it or screenshot it at home.
- Go early. Both operators open at 9 AM. The morning float is quiet, uncrowded, and you’re off the water before the shuttle lines build. By 1 PM on a Saturday you’ll be waiting for a bus.
- Water shoes. The river bottom is rocky and there are stretches under a foot deep where you’re standing up whether you planned to or not. Riding boots are not the answer. Pack cheap water shoes in a saddlebag.
- Waterproof pouch for the phone and key fob. No bags, no backpacks, no coolers. A pouch on a lanyard is the only thing coming with you. Consider leaving the fob locked in a bag on the bike if you can.
- The river has deep spots. Most of it is knee to waist deep, but there are pockets running up to ten feet. If you’re not a strong swimmer, take the life vest. They’re free.
- Check the water level before you commit to the long ride. Low water turns a 2.5-hour float into a 3+ hour workout. Ask at the counter — they’ll tell you straight.
- Ride in wearing gear you can strip fast. Mesh jacket, not full leathers. You’ll be in the parking lot changing.
- Park the bike in the shade if you can find any. A black seat in a Helen parking lot in August is a legitimate hazard on the way home. Bring a cover if you can.
